Product details

Bourbon barrel-aged beers have been a hugely popular style ever since American craft brewers first started exploring this deliciously innovative technique in the 1990s. And the results of those experiments have only become more sought-after over the past decades.

We've packed the best elements of the style, along with the finest ingredients, into a foolproof recipe kit that brings the best of the craft breweries to you. By starting with a stronger-than-average robust porter, then infusing it with bourbon-soaked oak (we recommend Maker's Mark), the end result is quite possibly the best beer ever.

You'll have to supply your own bourbon, so be sure to save a little to sip on brew day to really capture the spirit. The intense aroma and flavor of toasted American oak and the sweet graininess of good bourbon meld with the bittersweet roastiness of porter to make for a very characterful beer.

Due to the high starting gravity of this kit, we recommend pitching multiple packs of yeast or preparing a yeast starter for best results.

Awesome Brew

I have brewed this recipe four times in the last two years - I love it! I've refined the time frames a bit and am even more happy with the outcome. I leave it in the primary for two weeks, leave it in the secondary for 3 weeks before adding the bourbon chips. Then another two weeks before bottling. I add 2 teaspoons of hydrated US-05 to the bottling bucket because some of my previous batches were not as carbonated as I wanted. It was ready to drink after 3 weeks conditioning. But, I think this beer tastes better as it ages. I am letting it sit in the basement for a few more months. This is an awesome brew.

Can't wait to start brewing!

The delivery of my Bourbon Barrel Porter kit was prompt and I immediately refrigerated the yeast. It's been five years since I brewed a batch of beer so I'll be relying heavily on your brewmasters as I go through the steps.

An absolute must brew for me year after year!

I have been brewing for many years, and have brewed hundreds of batches. This beer done right is a huge winner. I hold a music festival every summer at my home in Fort Worth. I brew up several beers for it each year and have them on tap for our guests to enjoy. Three or four years ago one of the musicians came up to me and wanted to know exactly what this beer was because, in his own words, "I grew up in Germany and have been all over the world drinking beer and playing music. This beer is the best I've ever had!" I now brew this beer for that band every year. I named it after him, so this beer is now known around here as "The Obermiller" I use TX Whiskey in it. I found that side by side the TX Whiskey version is better in every way. TX has a pronounced vanilla flavor that goes perfectly with the all grain porter.

Love it!

Better than expected! Except I mistakenly used whiskey and not bourbon whiskey. I ordered a second kit as I always want to have it on hand!
