Grain Mills

*Barley Crusher Mills

A high quality, precision-machined grain mill constructed of materials that will last a lifetime: 1018 cold-rolled steel for the rollers, 6061 aluminum for the mill body and hopper, tool steel for the axles with oil-impregnated bronze bushings.

The 5-inch rollers have a 12 TPI knurl to efficiently pull the grain through the rollers while leaving the hull intact to form an excellent filter bed for sparging. Rollers are adjustable at both ends to keep the gap spacing parallel and give a uniform crush along the entire length of the rollers. The default gap spacing is marked and set at 0.039" at assembly; the gap adjustment range is from 0.015" to 0.070".

The standard hopper model holds 7 pounds and the large hopper model holds 15 pounds. No adapters needed to use a 3/8 drill motor; using a 3/8 drill motor at 500 RPM gives a throughput of 6 pounds a minute.

Comes with hopper, solid base, crank and handle, and lifetime warranty.

*Schmidling Maltmill

Two 10 inch textured cold-rolled steel rollers efficiently pull grain through, and give a professional crush. When cranked by hand, throughput is about one pound of grain in 15 seconds. Hopper capacity is approximately three pounds. Mills are mounted on a wood base that can rest on a bucket (or kettle or picnic cooler), or be clamped or bolted to a work table.

Model P features a preset 0.045" spacing between the rollers, and assures grain will only be crushed enough to expose the contents without tearing the hulls or unduly compacting the malt. It provices an excellent crush on most grain. Model A allows you to change the space between the rollers on one end for an improved crush, customized to your system and grain. Model AA has adjustable spacing on both ends of the rollers for maximum crush control.

Please note: To motorize the mill you must select the Gear Drive Option.

Please allow 1-3 weeks for delivery, as all maltmills ship directly from the manufacturer. These mills are available ONLY within the lower 48 United States.

*Crankandstein Grain Mills

High-quality homebrew mills! Aluminum block frames, 5-inch knurled steel rollers on oil-impregnated bronze bushings. Mills can be driven with a standard 3/8" electric drill (not included) or the optional handcrank, sold separately. Mills can be mounted above or below the base and attached using the included mounting bolts.

Mill assemblies include the rollers, housing, and drive shaft; you will need to provide a base, hopper, and handcrank or electric drill to feed the grain through the mill. Crankandstein's own pre-assembled mill bases, hoppers, and handcranks are available (see below).

Crankandstein CGM-2A. This is a two-roller mill. The active roller is driven by a standard 3/8" electric drill (not included) to feed the grain through the adjustable gap and crush the grist. Both ends of the passive roller ride in bushings that are offset mounted in an adjustable stainless knob. The knob is held in a fixed position by a set-screw that you can loosen to adjust the mill. This system provides an adjustment range 0.70".

Crankandstein CGM-2D. This mill uses the 2A design with the addition of an all-metal detent knob adjustment system. The detents take all the guesswork out of determining exactly where to set your adjustment knobs. They also offer accurate reproduction of gap settings from batch to batch and crush to crush.

Both ends of the passive roller of the 2D ride in bushings that are offset-mounted in an all-metal detent knob to provide the gap adjustment. The knob is held in a fixed position by a spring loaded ball screw that positively engages each of the detents in the knob. This system provides an adjustment range of about .040" with an approximate .005" change per detent.

Crankandstein CGM-3E. Three-roller mill configured to double-crush grain for higher yields. The active roller feeds grain through a fixed gap between the two main rollers, then the grain is crushed a second time by the adjustable secondary gap between the active roller and the third roller.

The secondary gap is adjustable via durable stainless knobs. The knobs are held in a fixed position by a set-screw that you can loosen to adjust the mill. The system provides an adjustment range of 0.070". The mill uses a flatter knurl on the third roller to provide better starch separation without damaging the husks. Also included is an adjustment bar that allows you to precisely set both adjusting knobs by the exact same amount by tying them together.

Crankandstein CGM-3D. This mill uses the 3E design with the addition of an all-metal detent knob adjustment system. The detents take all the guesswork out of determining exactly where to set your adjustment knobs. They also offer accurate reproduction of gap settings from batch to batch and crush to crush.

The secondary gap is adjustable via the detents that house bushings which are offset mounted to provide the gap adjustment. The knob is held in a fixed position by a spring loaded ball screw that positively engages each of the detents in the knob. This system provides an adjustment range of about 0.040" with an approximate 0.005" change per detent.
