Simpsons Maris Otter Malt

Simpsons Maris Otter is a premium English 2-row base malt made from a heritage barley variety introduced in 1966. Grown and malted exclusively in the British Isles, Maris Otter is prized by brewers worldwide for its legendary flavor and exceptional brewhouse performance.

With its low nitrogen content, plump kernels, and robust husk, this malt delivers consistent results in the mash tun and lends a rich, slightly nutty malt flavor that modern high-yield barleys often lack. Maris Otter produces an orange-tinged golden wort and excels in any English-style beer that calls for depth, clarity, and heritage character.

Maris Otter Flavor Profile:

Simpsons Maris Otter imparts a signature depth of malt character with flavors like:

  • Rich Malty Sweetness: Full-bodied, classic English malt backbone
  • Nutty Undertones: Slightly earthy and warm on the palate
  • Toasty Bread Crust: Subtle biscuit and crusty bread notes

This heritage malt allows other ingredients to shine while giving your beer a firm foundation of malt complexity.

Maris Otter Color & Lovibond:

  • Lovibond: 3.5–4.5°L
  • Contributes a deep golden to orange hue

Maris Otter Usage:

Use at up to 100% of the grain bill in traditional English-style beers, or as a flavorful base malt in other recipes. Maris Otter’s enzymatic power supports excellent conversion in single infusion mashes.

Beer tastes like its from the pub

I tried an English bitters recipe with the otter as the base malt and damn. Ill be making it again. It got to 5.8% and had a nice malty flavor without an overpowering hops. Just the thing for morning, lunch, and dinner beers. The whole pint. Point... Found my go to beer thanks to Northern Brewers.

Accept No Substitute!

As someone who has brewed 515 batches since 1993, I can say -- without qualifications -- that Marris Otter is the ultimate base malt for any ale that calls for a malty backbone. It is an "iconic ingredient" for any English style, or American versions of the same. BJCP National Judge gives it two thumbs up!

Received less than orderd

Brought 10 lbs of Simpson’s MO, received 9 lbs 14 oz. My order also took 2 weeks to arrive. Not a happy customer. Probably not ordering anything from you again.

Not Crushes

I had ordered crushed grains, and the bag says they were crushed, but they either weren’t or the crush was so terrible that it killed my efficiency.
