Glass Carboys & Jugs
The glass carboy and plastic carboy have long been the preferred fermentation vessels for many homebrewers. Glass carboys are impervious to oxygen that can harm your beer and they are generally resistant to scratches during the cleaning process. Plastic carboys, on the other hand, are lighter weight and won't shatter if dropped or bumped together. Either option will produce great beer if properly cared for, so it is really a matter of personal preference if you choose a plastic fermenter or a glass fermenter.

Fermenter Sizing:
- 6.5 gallon fermenters are perfect for the primary stage of beer or wine fermentation. The extra headspace allows for the production of krausen on a 5 gallon batch of beer.
- 5 gallon fermenters are best for the secondary conditioning stage of beer fermentation. The smaller size eliminates extra airspace in the fermenter reducing the chances of oxidation which can stale the beer prematurely.
