It works! It is very fragile. Comes in handy when making large amounts of yeast for "pitching". WOuld be willing to pay for "PYREX" brand
I've had two of these flasks and both cracked under normal usage. After the first one, I thought I'g give the brand another try. Knowing how fragile the first one was, I was extra gentle with this one. After only 3 staters, I noticed slight amount of liquid on my stir plate. Upon inspection, I discovered a crack on the bottom of the flask.
I could have bought a lot of yeast for the $150+ I spent on these. They're garbage- Stay away!
After making over 100 starters in my trusty 5 L flask from a competitor, a crack formed so it was time for an upgrade. First use of the Northern Brewer 5 L flask, using a separate pan to boil and a funnel to place hot wort in flask. After placing the flask in cool water without ice and a crack formed. Northern Brewer was very prompt with their customer service and sent me another no questions asked. Second unit was not any better, as with the same procedure a crack formed. Again, customer service was nice enough to send me another unit with advice to change my procedure. The third unit I received has a noticeable bubble on the seam of the flask. The third unit is untested at this point. Just avoid this flask unless you plan on trying your luck for a decent unit. Regardless of what happens to the third flask I will not be purchasing another one. Two stars given for the customer service and standing behind the product. However this is a one star flask.
It's big, get's the job done, and looks really impressive when your non-brewing buddies see it sitting on the Maelstrom in the background.
Buyer Beware. This is not pyrex and does not hold up to heating and cooling quickly. After making a starter for the first time, this flask was put into an ice bath and cracked. I thought the price was too good to be true and it was. Product is clearly a knockoff, made in India (labeled on flask) and does not hold up like Pyrex.
