Product details

Finest malts from the British Isles. Maris Otter is an English 2-row varietal barley introduced in 1966 that was developed specifically to produce high quality malt for the production of ale.

Its low nitrogen content, uniformly plump kernels, and robust husk has made it a favorite among English brewers for its reliable and forgiving brewhouse performance, and, most notably, because of the unique Maris Otter flavor it adds to the beer which may be absent in modern barley varieties grown for yield and ease of agricultural production.

This fine base malt will easily convert with a single infusion mash, and produce an orange tinged golden wort with a unique rich, slightly nutty flavor. An excellent malt for any English style beer. 3.5-4.5°L

Beer tastes like its from the pub

I tried an English bitters recipe with the otter as the base malt and damn. Ill be making it again. It got to 5.8% and had a nice malty flavor without an overpowering hops. Just the thing for morning, lunch, and dinner beers. The whole pint. Point... Found my go to beer thanks to Northern Brewers.

Accept No Substitute!

As someone who has brewed 515 batches since 1993, I can say -- without qualifications -- that Marris Otter is the ultimate base malt for any ale that calls for a malty backbone. It is an "iconic ingredient" for any English style, or American versions of the same. BJCP National Judge gives it two thumbs up!

Received less than orderd

Brought 10 lbs of Simpson’s MO, received 9 lbs 14 oz. My order also took 2 weeks to arrive. Not a happy customer. Probably not ordering anything from you again.

Not Crushes

I had ordered crushed grains, and the bag says they were crushed, but they either weren’t or the crush was so terrible that it killed my efficiency.

Local supply shortage

I started ordering all base malts through Northern Brewer due to inconsistent supply at my local store. My last order (30+ lbs) arrived three days after I ordered. Very impressed.
