Product details

Modeled after Russian River Brewing Company's best-selling Pliny the Younger, this overgrown nephew and adopted son to our best-selling Plinian Legacy is as American as excess itself. With only enough ingredients for 300 recipe kits, the only limited part of this triple IPA is the number of kits we have available. Full-bodied with extreme hop character, the explosive citrus, pine, and grapefruit resins are barely balanced by a huge 10% ABV.

Featuring three hop shots and 19 oz. of hops made up of nearly every iconic American favorite from Centennial to Simcoe, impressionable palates beware. The complex, overpowering citrus profile of The Plinian Progeny does not fade as quickly as its youthful namesake.

Brewing Notes

  • Style: Imperial IPA
  • Fermentation Range: 60 - 73F
  • Original Gravity: 1.090
  • SRM: 6
  • IBUs: 150+
  • ABV: 10.0%

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Faint backbone of slightly sweet malt, but dominated by the hops. Generous aromas of citrus, pine, dank resin and fruit dominate the nose from dry-hopping.
  • Appearance: Deep golden to orangeish color. Clarity is a bit low due to massive dry hop additions. Nice, firm, long-lasting white head laces all the way to the bottom of your glass.
  • Flavor: Malt is not prominent. The flavor is dominated by a complex hop character of fruit, citrus, pine, and resin. Clean fermentation profile. Balance is decidedly towards the hops. Long, lingering bitter finish sticks on the palate.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Faint alcohol warmth on the finish. No astringency.

Notes from Brad, Northern Brewer Head DevelopmentBrewer:

This monolith of an ale can be a bit tricky to brew—the nearly irrational quantity of hops is a monster to handle.  Due to massive hop additions, The Plinian Progeny recipe has been formulated to produce 6 gallons of wort. The extra gallon makes up for loss due to the excessive trub you’ll find at both the bottom of the kettle from boil additions and in your fermentor from dry-hopping.

It may sound appealing to use a hop boiling bag, but beware—keeping the hops quarantined will limit hop utilization and the resulting bitterness, flavor and aroma necessary for a triple IPA will be diminished. For the most intense hop experience, abide by the 6-gallon recommendation and enjoy the Plinian Progeny in its infancy—its best hop character fades with age.

Hops galore, solid recipe, big beer

Got this because I wanted to make a big IPA for Christmas presents and I'd never used the hop shots before and wanted to see what that was like. This kit did not disappoint. The hop shots were super interesting and gave a lot of bitterness without all the hop matter. Thank goodness this kit was 6 gallons as a base. In the end I got about 3.5 gallons out of it. I think with concentrated hop products in the whirlpool and dry hop it might have gone up to 4+ gallons. There was a lot of yeast cake from the 2x S05 and 1x BRY97 I used to ferment it. I'm not sure if I was particularly efficient, but OG was 1.113 with an FG of 1.013 for a 13% beer. It's a monster, but it smells and tastes amazing.

Fantastic IPA

If you love IPAs like I do, you'll love this IPA. I looked at the grain and hops bill and thought it would be too much. I was surprised how the aroma was inviting. The beer was smooth and all tropical notes came together to make an excellent IPA. This brew isn't meant for the faint hearted, but for IPA lovers. I brewed this winter and will wait until the summer to break it out.

Exactly what I was hoping for

Delicious, resinous, and perfectly bitter. My mash wasn’t super efficient with my BIAB system. I had to add some additional sugar to hit my target gravity.
