Barley Wine All Grain Beer Recipe Kit

Straight forward recipe. OG of 1.086 with a FG of 1.010. Tastes fine at this point but it’s in the secondary fermenter for another three months. Looking foreword to a great fall release. Okay

I completely agree with the other reviewer in that I have no idea how you get 1.082 with the grain bill in this kit, at least with the equipment I have. I added an extra 4 lb of Maris Otter and 1 lb of Briess Caramel 20L and still only managed 1.090 with my crappy efficiency (I also added 1 oz Chinook and 1 oz Willamette at 60 min for a bit more flavor). 1 month in the primary, 9 months in the secondary and 1 month in the bottle with some bottling yeast. Tastes amazing - defiantly one of my best brews. Can't wait to brew again!

Very good barley wine. It was a little low on the ABV scale and tasted a little thin for my taste so I added some Jack Daniel's and some medium toasted oak cubes to give it a little oak flavor. Not a bad barley wine, just not really what I expected. That being said, I plan on making this again.

Not sure how NB figure's they're going to get an OG of 1.082 with only 15.5 lbs of grain... I had to add another 5 lbs of grain to get an OG of 1.088 with this recipe. I also added another 3 oz of hops to off set the added grains. Has been in the bottle for 7 months now, so it's still "young" for a barley wine. At 9.31% ABV it's a weak barley wine, and so far myself and several others feel it needs more body. The taste is good, but tastes watered down. I will experiment with this kit some more and add even more grains in the future to try and get more body out of it. But the kit "as is" is weak. I have used many other NB all grain kits with great success and usually I get the same numbers they anticipate with my set up, so my brew house efficiency, etc, is not a factor here.

To me, barleywine is the undisputed King of all beer styles. Back in May I finally took the dive and brewed this up as only my 7th brew. I knew I wanted to brew then when I first started, but I wanted to practice on other styles because I knew this one had to sit. Now, almost 6 months later, I had my first glass of this brew. It is exactly what I love in barleywines. Its boozy, its malty, its complex, and overall just delicious. This is one that I will continue to let age in the keg, and have a glass on those special nights which deserve this special brew. I think its time to brew a second batch and see what I can come up with.
